Trip to Kossdalsvingane

Experience the spectacular hike up Kossdalssvingane on Osterøy, a cultural-historical road monument from the late 19th century. The hike takes you up the 17 hairpin bends in Kossdalen, with a gradient of 27% over 400 meters, and offers fantastic views along the way.

Description of the trip:

The walk to Kossdalssvingane is approx. 2.5 km long and is perfect for families with children. It takes around 1.5 hours round trip and is on a gravel road, so running shoes work well. The road used to be the main road between Hosanger and the farms further inland on Osterøy, but is now car-free. The trip is both easy and scenic, and is well suited to a walk.

How to get there:

Hosanger on Osterøy is about 50 minutes' drive from Bergen city center. You can also take bus no. 900 from Bergen bus station to Hosanger on Osterøy, a trip that takes about 1.5 hours. For timetables, see skyss.no. It's a short walk from the bus stop in Hosanger to Kossdalsvegen, where the trip to Kossdalssvingane starts.

Parking:

The starting point for the tour is Mjøsvågen in Hosanger. It is best to park at Hosanger Montessori School. From Mjøsvågen there is an old road into Kossdalen. At the end of the road, it rises steeply 175 meters up the side of the valley, with the 17 hairpin bends.

Rental of bicycles:

If you prefer to cycle, you can rent a bike at Mjøsvågen Landhandleri. Put the bike in the lowest gear and experience the steep hairpin bends.

Reward after the trip:

When you return to Mjøsvågen Landhandleri, it's the perfect place for fresh baked goods and a cup of coffee. The country store is open all year round.

Kossdalssvingane is an impressive gravel road that was built by hand 130 years ago. It was an important transportation route for farmers and goods. More recently, the road has been rediscovered by local hikers and international Instagram tourists. Osterøy municipality has also set aside NOK 700,000 to prepare the road for increased tourist traffic.
