Historical attractions

Traces of humans have been found on Osterøy dating back to around 8000 BC. For people with an interest in history, Osterøy has something special to offer:

  • Osterøy Museum, cultural history museum. Exhibitions, themes related to fjord culture, local crafts, small industry, textiles and art exhibitions.

  • Hamre church, church town with a stave church from around 1024.

There is now a distinctive long wooden church from 1622.

  • Ole Bull House, built by the famous violinist and composer Ole Bull on his father's farm at Valestrandsfossen.

Many of the great artists of the time, including Edvard Grieg, visited him at Valestrandsfossen.

  • Havråtunet, one of the best preserved cluster tunnels in Western Norway with a history dating back to the Bronze Age.

  • Herlandsfossen Power Station, 100 years of power history, a pioneering project.

  • Mjøsvågen, industrial history, art and culture in a protected boathouse and workshop environment.

  • Kossdalssvingane, a cultural-historical road section that was built by hand with 17 sharp bends and a gradient of 27%. Completed in 1897.
